Shortly after 1:00 AM on September 27, 1980, East Peoria Firefighter William A. Folmar was in his personal vehicle crossing the Murray Baker Bridge into East Peoria when he came upon a single vehicle accident. Police officers were on the scene but rescue crews were not yet present. Firefighter Folmar stopped his vehicle, per department policy at the time, and exited to see if rescue assistance was required. After checking with the police officer on the presence of injuries or need for rescue, Firefighter Folmar was returning to his car when he was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver who failed to notice the accident scene. Firefighter Folmar was four days shy of his one year anniversary with the East Peoria Fire Department.
Firefighter Folmar was born on February 11, 1955 in Niagara Falls, New York, a son of William and Lucille Folmar. He married Judy Harris on January 25, 1975 in Washington. He joined the East Peoria Fire Department on October 1, 1979. He was survived by his pregnant widow, one daughter Stephanie and one son, Justin.
