Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Daniel Ramos was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a residential fire in Chicago on December 1, 2018.
The firefighters were on the way to the fire when they were alerted that the incident had escalated into a multi-unit fire with victims trapped in the rear of the building. The victims were actively trying to escape. Ramos headed straight to the back of the building on arrival, beginning to force entry to a door with several locks and chains.
Ramos finally broke through, noticing heavy furniture and a nearly unconscious victim obstructing the entryway, which complicated entering. After some difficulty, he was able to stick his head in the door. He carefully pushed against the doorway obstructions and squeezed in to access the victim. As he entered the burning building the door shut behind him. He quickly moved the furniture and unconscious victim away from the door. Ramos then used his Halligan bar to force the door open and get himself and the victim out of the home and to the EMTs to be treated.
