Hampshire Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Trevor Herrmann was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during an apartment fire in downtown Hampshire on February 6, 2015.
Herrmann happened to be in the area and was alerted to the fire when a passerby shouted about smoke coming from an apartment. Herrmann and a police officer entered the building, believing someone was likely inside because of a car parked in a tenant spot. There was little visibility because of heavy smoke conditions, and Herrmann had no gear with him. He could hear groaning and decided to enter. He crawled through the smoke and located a female victim. As he made his way out with the victim, the police officer stood in the doorway and called out to him so that he would be able to find his way back outside.
The victim lost consciousness and stopped breathing while being carried out, so Herrmann and several other firefighters who arrived on-scene performed CPR until she began to breathe again. Herrmann began to show signs of illness from smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital. He was released the following morning.
