Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Tomasz Oszkinis and Paramedic Jason Raymond were awarded the Medal of Valor for their actions following a shooting in Chicago in 2014.
Ambulance 14 was dispatched to a report of multiple gunshot victims, including the possibility of a Chicago police officer shot. Raymond and Oszkinis arrived to see many Chicago police officers with weapons drawn, and more police units arriving from all directions. The shooter was still actively shooting from inside a three-story building. Using the Ambulance as a shield from shots being fired, the two exited the vehicle. They gathered their ALS equipment and went in search of the injured officer. They found him and discovered he had been shot at least twice. They then secured him on a stretcher and removed him from the Hot Zone with assistance from the Chicago Police Department. He was transported without incident.
