Lieutenant Joseph Solcani and Firefighters Mark Cavaletti and Michael Rowan of the Chicago Fire Department received the Medal of Valor for their efforts in rescuing an elderly man trapped inside a burning building in Chicago, Illinois, on April 21, 2014.
The Chicago Fire Department received a morning call that a 2½ story residence was on fire with a person still trapped inside. The fire was coming from the back and was slowly edging towards the front of the building. A 73-year-old man was found in a second-floor bedroom suffering from smoke inhalation and was unconscious. The firefighters determined that it would be too dangerous to carry the man out the door, so Cavaletti climbed out the window and carried the man down the 20-foot ladder to safety.
