Chicago Fire Department Captain Alfred Kiefer was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a residential fire on May 29, 2013.
The fire broke out at a four-story brick apartment building. Heavy smoke and fire poured out from the rear of the first-floor apartment. As firefighters arrived on scene, they were alerted that a person was trapped on the first floor in a rear bedroom with burglar bars covering the windows blocking his exit. Kiefer entered the building under extreme heat and smoke conditions and crawled to the apartment to begin the search to find the bedroom where the victim was trapped. Though blinded by smoke, Kiefer was able to make verbal contact with the victim and urged him to keep talking so he could locate him.
Kiefer rescued the victim and passed him off to waiting EMS crews as they emerged from the building.
