Chicago Fire Department Firefighter James Doyle was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during an apartment fire in Chicago on February 18, 2012.
In the early morning, Truck 47 responded to an alarm. They were alerted that people were trapped on the third floor of the structure while on the way. Once at the fire, Doyle climbed the aerial ladder and gained entry through a third-floor window despite large amounts of heated smoke. While conducting a primary search, Doyle found an unresponsive male victim. He then had to raise the victim up and through the window onto the ladder. Moments after Doyle began carrying the victim down the ladder, the apartment they had been in was overtaken by flames. He continued down and transferred the victim to the ambulance to receive treatment.
