Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant John Manchester was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a commercial fire in Chicago on December 15, 2012.
Firefighters arrived at the building and saw heavy smoke conditions. Manchester entered the building from the front, and heard screams coming from the rear of the structure. He alerted the other firefighters around him and then moved past the protection of the charged hose line, moving through thick heated smoke towards the sound of the screams. He found a female victim nearly unconscious and trapped in a utility room. Manchester removed the victim from the utility room, through dense smoke and to the front of the building where the crew of Ambulance 21 began treating her.
