Firefighter Tim Pogue of the Aurora Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions to rescue a fleeing suspect from the Fox River in Aurora, Illinois on October 2, 2000.
Aurora police officers were in pursuit of a suspect in a robbery. The suspect, in an effort to avoid being detained, jumped into the Fox River. The officers called the Aurora Fire Department and requested diving personnel and a rescue boat. Firefighter Pogue was among those dispatched.
Pogue entered the rescue boat with two Aurora police officers as they pursued the suspect near a dam. The suspect soon became trapped in the dam’s undertow. Pogue sacrificed his own safety and jumped into the dangerous waters to pull the suspect out. The suspect was later charged on a felony count of robbery.
