Firefighter Ronald Rains of the West Frankfort Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts to rescue a woman from a burning home in West Frankfort, Illinois on July 9, 2000.
The West Frankfort Fire Department received a call about a residential fire and Rains had to respond to the fire himself because his two partners were assisting with an ambulance call at the time. When he arrived, police informed him that a disabled woman was trapped inside the building and that they were unable to rescue her because of the intense heat and smoke produced by the fire. Rains donned his gear and entered the house. He found the victim about twenty feet from the front door of the home and was able to pull her to safety.
