On April 1, 2009, Assistant Chief John Jeffers of the Wellington-Greer Fire Protection District became ill while on duty. After testing a fire hose and helping to reload it onto a fire engine, Jeffers reported feeling sick. He was taken home, where he suffered a fatal heart attack the following day.
Jeffers owned and operated Barney’s Garage in Wellington, and was also a farmer. Funeral services for Jeffers were held at the Wellington United Methodist Church on April 6, 2009, and he was buried at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.
