On October 29, 1981, Assistant Chief Sam Taylor of the Winthrop Harbor Volunteer Fire Department died in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire.
Taylor suffered a fatal heart attack while searching for the seat of the fire on the first floor of the house.
Taylor was treated by firefighters at the scene and was transported to the hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
