Incident Summary

On February 12, 2008, Chief Kerry Sheridan of the Troy Township Fire Protection District died in the line of duty. Sheridan was found unconscious in his fire department office, and he was transported to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. A memorial service for Sheridan was held at Troy Crossroad Middle School on February 16, and he was survived by his widow and two daughters.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Sheridan had served as fire chief since 1960, while also working full-time for Illinois Bell Telephone. In 1973, he started one of the first fire cadet programs in Illinois, and in 1974 he joined the Joliet Junior College Fire Science Advisory Committee. Sheridan had been a member of the Will County Board since 1982, and he also served on the Will County Local Emergency Planning Committee and the Will County Forest Preserve.
