Incident Summary

On January 27, 1908, Chicago Fire Department Truckman James Gallagher of Truck 1 died in the line of duty while fighting a fire in the Mayer Building on West Adams Street. Gallagher was killed when a wall collapsed, and it took firefighters nearly twelve hours to recover his body from the debris. The fire destroyed the Mayer Building and the Hotel Florence, and several other buildings sustained damage.
