Incident Summary

On August 6, 1878, Edwin F. Ferris of the Chicago Fire Insurance Patrol was fatally injured while on duty at the Patrol 2 firehouse. Ferris was sleeping on the building’s roof because of the intense summer heat when the firehouse received an alarm in the middle of the night. Drowsy and confused about his location, Ferris stepped through an open hay loft door and fell nearly twenty feet to the firehouse floor below. Ferris fractured his spine, and died from his injuries on August 17.

Funeral services for Ferris were held at the Patrol 2 firehouse on August 19, and he was interred at Graceland Cemetery.
