On November 12, 1904, Chicago Fire Department Pipeman William Cleary of Engine 10 was fatally injured while fighting a fire aboard the freight steamer Gordon Campbell, which was docked at Chicago’s south pier. Cleary fractured his skull when he fell through a hatchway into the boat’s hold. Cleary was transported to Samaritan Hospital, but he died from his injuries the following day, November 13.
