On June 15, 1986, Lieutenant Robert Liesz of the Chicago Fire Department was fatally injured when he was struck by an air conditioner that fell out of a burning apartment building. Liesz was stationed outside the building when the fire burned through a windowsill on the building's third floor, leaving the air conditioner without any support. Liesz died the following day while undergoing surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital.
