Incident Summary
On March 20, 2004, Assistant Chief Charles Michael Lehnen of the Bethalto Volunteer Fire Department was hospitalized, a day after fighting a residential structure fire. Lehnen complained of dizziness and numbness before he lost consciousness. Doctors diagnosed a cerebrovascular accident, and transferred Lehnen to another hospital, where he died on March 21.
