On July 4, 1921, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Garrett Heffernan of Squad 8 died in the line of duty while responding to a false alarm at the intersection of 29th and Wallace Streets. Heffernan was thrown from the Squad 8 apparatus as it turned from Canal Street onto 29th Street, and he was crushed between the apparatus and a telephone pole. He was transported to Mercy Hospital, where he died from a broken back and various other internal injuries. Heffernan was survived by his widow and three children.
