Captain Frank Cambria of Truck 35 of the Chicago Fire Department received the Medal of Honor for his actions to save two children from a residential fire in Chicago, Illinois on January 5, 2005.
Chicago Truck 35, with Cambria in command, responded and the unit arrived to find a basement fire at the residence. Shortly after arriving, Cambria was notified that there were two children trapped inside. He entered the house to search for the children and located a twelve-year-old girl in the attic. She was gasping for breath and barely conscious but indicated that her brother was still in the residence. Cambria passed the girl to fellow Chicago Fire Department firefighter Lieutenant Fleming and resumed his search.
After searching the remainder of the attic, Cambria began searching the bedrooms for the girl’s brother. Despite zero visibility conditions due to the intensifying fire, he located the seven-year-old wedged between a bed and a window. Cambria then shared his air supply with the boy while he carried him outside to safety.
