Firefighter David Doyle of Truck 7 of the Chicago Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts to rescue an eighteen-month-old girl from an apartment fire in Chicago, Illinois on October 6, 2009.
Firefighters from Truck 7 responded to the fire at 4:50 p.m. on the 2700 block of West Wilcox in the Garland Park neighborhood. When they arrived, a woman alerted them that an eighteen-month-old girl was trapped upstairs. Firefighter Doyle, a father with three daughters of his own, ran up the stairs to the third floor. Once there, he forced open a locked door and crawled through the thick black smoke until he found the young victim, who was unresponsive. Because the stairwell was quickly filling up with smoke, Doyle took the child, who was gasping for air, down an exterior fire escape. Once out of the fiery building, paramedics were able to get the child to breathe on her own.
