Chicago Fire Department Firefighters Darryl Jones and Ryan Quinn were awarded the Medal of Valor for their actions during a residential fire in Chicago on August 25, 2020.
Jones and Quinn arrived with Truck 22 to a residential fire of a four-story multifamily building. Burning porches on multiple floors had spread into the building. When entering the structure, they encountered high heat and smoke down to the floor. They were then made aware that a person was missing. Jones and Quinn encountered hoarding conditions outside of the unit after climbing the stairs to the fourth floor through intense conditions. They forced their way inside, and then conducted a left-handed search through piles of clutter inside the unit. They found the victim between the sink and the toilet. The two had to remove the bathroom door and rotate the victim before carrying him back over the debris and into the public hallway. Quinn created a girth hitch around the victim, then carried him down the four stories in difficult conditions until they reached the street and were able to get him to the ambulance crew to receive medical care.
