Lieutenant Eric Schrage of the Collinsville Fire Department was awarded with the Medal of Honor for his actions on September 23, 2017 that saved an individual from an apartment fire.
Lt. Schrage was driving to his son’s baseball game when he observed smoke and fire coming from a first floor apartment on St. Louis Road in Collinsville. Schrage stopped, determined that residents were still inside the building, and called 911 to report the fire and pulled an alarm. He went into the burning building without gear or a hose line, and found a trapped individual.
Schrage was able to get the disoriented person out of the building and closed the door to the building on his way out to help prevent the fire from spreading to other apartments. After assessing the victim, he waited with her until the ambulance and fire crews arrived and gave them details about the fire.
