Glen Ellyn Firefighter Chris Guare was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during an apartment fire on May 10, 2014.
Guare and other firefighters responded to a fire at a three-story building in the early morning. The fire was confined to one apartment, and once the firefighters forced the door open the fire became fully engaged. Guare was able to identify a victim lying on the floor of the apartment using a thermal energy device. He rushed to save the victim as the other firefighters used hoses to battle the flames. He had to crawl on his stomach to reach the victim and was able to remove him and bring him out to the paramedics.
