Lieutenant Clarence Wagner of the Lansing Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions to save a wheelchair-bound occupant from a residential fire in Lansing, Illinois on July 12, 2001.
Lieutenant Wagner responded to a house fire at 4:18 a.m. that was only a block away from his residence. There was a report of a possible tenant trapped inside. A basement fire in the residence produced thick smoke that wafted up to the first floor. Wagner was the first responder on the scene. Without the aid of his SCBA, he risked his own life by entering the home. He found a wheelchair-bound female who had fallen out of it in a frenzied attempt to exit the home. Wagner removed the victim from the fiery residence. She was treated and later made a full recovery.
