Firefighters Robert Padgett and Daniel Tasso of the Downers Grove Fire Department received the Medal of Valor for their actions during a residential fire in Downers Grove, Illinois on August 6, 2000.
Engine 731 and Medic 734 were dispatched to a single-story residence on Lee Street that had smoke billowing out of it. Nearby residents outside the structure indicated that there might be victims in the back bedrooms of the house. Firefighters Padgett and Tasso entered the structure through different bedroom windows before there was a charged hoseline available. In the middle bedroom, Tasso found a six-year-old girl. In the north bedroom, Padgett found a 39-year-old woman. Thanks to the help of fellow firefighters, the victims were successfully removed from the smoky residence.
