Lieutenant Thomas Krueger of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts to rescue a female victim from a residential fire in Vernon Hills, Illinois on December 19, 2008.
At 10:20 p.m. on the 1200 block of Georgetown Lane in Vernon Hills, firefighters from multiple departments were dispatched to a fire at a two-story apartment building. Flames and smoke were billowing out of the windows. Bystanders said that one resident remained inside the fiery building. Lieutenant Krueger and Firefighter Paul Schebel broke the front door down and entered the smoky residence. Krueger heard a cough and was able to find his way to the female victim, rescuing her and her dog. He then safely removed them from the apartment.
