Firefighters John Abel and Rodney Scovil of the Pekin Fire Department were awarded the Medal of Valor for their actions to rescue a fellow firefighter at a residential fire in Pekin, Illinois on April 29, 2001.
The Pekin Fire Department was called to a house fire on 415 Chestnut St. at five in the morning. Smoke was billowing out from the second floor and flames could be seen through the windows. Firefighters Abel and Lynken Troyne went in through the front door, while Firefighter Scovil provided backup. As they advanced, a section of the floor gave way. Firefighter Troyne fell through the floor, landing on a bed that was in the basement.
While Troyne lay on the bed, unable to move, Abel and Scovil managed to both fend off the fire and pull Troyne out of the basement. Troyne was safely removed, suffering a sprained shoulder in the fall.
