Lieutenant Karl Crist of the Fulton Fire Protection District received the Medal of Valor for his actions to rescue two victims from an apartment fire in Fulton, Illinois on March 9, 2004.
At 10:30 p.m., a fire was reported at 701 11th Ave. Fulton Police Sergeant Tom Hochbaum and Lieutenant Crist arrived on the scene to find two victims dangling out of the rear window of the second-floor apartment. Sgt. Hochbaum found a ladder at a nearby residence and raised it to the window. Though he was not wearing protective gear, Crist climbed up the ladder and brought the two victims to safety.
